First of, if this is not allowed, feel free to delete this.

Second, a while back I read something about the Collector's Den being infected with a virus. Does anybody know if this got fixed or if it's still not safe to check out. If anybody could let me know somethings, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks and hugs, joyce

I AM SHOCKED!

Someone posted a video of herself inserting her cup, removing it, rinsing it, pouring the blood on a mirror and playing with it!

WARNING: VERY GRAPHIC AND GROSS! NOT FOR EVERYBODY!

Firefly and cross-stitch philosophy

  • Dec. 10th, 2009 at 10:47 PM
It's the week before finals week - also known as me writing all the research papers I've had more than a month to do week. I've developed a twitch in my right eye. I've also been stress-sewing between hours of reading and writing. Cross-stitching is so freaking orderly.

This is from the very beginning of the Firefly series - when Wash is playing with his little plastic dinos. :) The dinos themselves are from a little boy's bib pattern in Special Occasion Designs and Borders by Dale Burdett. It's from 1990, and stolen from my mother. I changed the colors, and flipped the T-rex to be facing the letters. The alphabet is also from that book.

Before I actually post the full thing...I decided to do the stegosaurus one color at a time, rather than one region at a time, like I tend to do. (What can I say? Attention problems?)

It was actually really interesting to me to watch it come together. It's fascinating to me to see seemingly strange and alien patterns come together to make sense. I actually wish it hadn't looked so much like a the final product by the second color.

So, if you'll bear with me, five photos of my stegosaurus, adding one green at a time, and finally outlining it. Yeah, I know I'm a bit silly. It's finals week, remember? *twitchtwitch*

My Steggy Series - 5 Huge Photos )

And here's the almost final product. Need to iron and frame it or something...but that will have to wait until I have an iron. I'll post an update eventually, probably tacked on to a different entry.

The whole piece...3 more photos )

crappy room dorm windows

  • Dec. 11th, 2009 at 1:06 AM
I'm on the 8th floor of a highrise style dorm building, and my window is insulated TERRIBLY. It is completely closed with a towel at the bottom, and it literally feels like there is cold wind blowing into the room. Since this is a university dorm, it's not like I have many options, but is there anything I can do?? My bed is under the window and I am cold!

Thanks in advance :)

Hey all. Could you what the discount ad means? I think it's all the finals draining my brain, but I have no idea what it means.

Friday Drabble Challenge #58

  • Dec. 11th, 2009 at 12:33 AM
.

First, a small order of business. Next week, I will be fleeing the country going home to England for Christmas, returning to the ancestral home *cough* that is, for the most part, internet free. That said, I would like to wish you a happy holiday of your choosing and let you know that the Drabble Challenge will return in the New Year... so, Happy New Year to you as well.

Please remember that you don't have to actually *use* the word in your drabble:

Tree
Tinsel
Cracker
Pudding
Elf
Panto
Mistletoe
Present
Wish
Snow

PLEASE try to remember to make each drabble a comment in response to the original post. That way, if the comments start to collapse, the drabbles themselves should remain visible. Thanks.

The rules, such as they are:
1) A drabble is, by definition a 100 word story. As this is a drabble challenge and not a “snippet” challenge, all responses should be 100 words exactly, no exceptions.

2) I have been asked to keep this to a single posting a week to avoid cluttering people’s flists. So, drabbles will be posted as individual comments under the posting. IF you would like to post your drabble on your own LJ and link to it that’s all right too. Just put that link in a comment under the posting.

RATING: Rather than worrying about individual headings I’m just going to say that any drabbles posted for these challenges might be a Brown or even Red Cortina for content/language, so let the reader beware!

Fantastic speeches from both Martin and Bill.

I've gotten some excellent responses to my request for a co-Mod--I'm at work, so I can't respond to them all today, but I will be online tomorrow briefly (thanks to the power of public libraries), so I will get back to everyone tomorrow. In the meantime, be well, do good work, and keep in touch. (Wait a minute, that's Garrison Keillor!) :)

The Keeper Stem - It's uncomfortable

  • Dec. 11th, 2009 at 11:26 AM
Hi there ladies
I have just purchased a type A Keeper and used it the last two days of my last period. I was wondering if anyone might be able to offer some advice on the stem? I have left about 5mm left of stem, as chopping it off entirely makes the three month return warranty void, but I am finding that it is rather uncomfortable - fine when I am sitting or stationary, but rubs a bit when I am in motion. I know that some people remove the stem entirely but am not sure if this will work for me or not. The stem sits just outside of my vagina, so it tends to poke me when I move. Can anyone advise about this?

Thanks

A new project for a cup?

Reusable Softcup?

  • Dec. 10th, 2009 at 6:38 PM
I looked around the community and couldn't find a post to this question...

I recently purchased some Instead Softcups and I really like them, but I hate that they're disposable. Is there a reusable version? The reason I ask is because I have a DivaCup, but you have to take it out before sex. My boyfriend faints at the sight of blood, so I have to use the Instead Softcups in order to have sex during my period. It's not a huge problem to just use one disposable Softcup once in a while (and my DivaCup the rest of the time), but it'd be nice to have a reusable option.

Tweaks and enhancements

  • As a number of you reported, a service interruption impaired sending and receiving notifications for a couple of days. This was due to an avalanche of snowflake cookies. We've removed the free snowflake cookie and unclogged the pipeline. Timely notifications should resume shortly. Please note that there's a backlog in our queues, so you'll be getting earlier notifications first. For more details, check out this post at [info]lj_maintenance.
  • In anticipation of the new year, we've embarked on a self-improvement kick to boost our backend (pun semi-intended). This will allow us to offer you a holiday promotion in the next few weeks (yes, we're listening and working very hard to make it happen). We sincerely appreciate your continued patience and support.

Holiday vgifts are here!

We've added some fantastic new vgifts to help you spread holiday cheer. We also hope you'll honor AIDS Awareness Month by purchasing virtual red ribbons. Priced at $2.99, we'll donate 100 percent of gross proceeds to IAVI.org (the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) to support the development and global distribution of an affordable HIV vaccine.

Introducing: LJLimericks

We cordially here do invite you
To craft a fine limerick. Might you?
Each week, a new theme,
Then a poll, that's our dream
Winner posted on news to delight you!

In honor of all the brilliant writers on LiveJournal, we've created a brand new community: [info]ljlimericks! Each week, we'll enter a handful of limericks into a poll (which we'll tuck snugly under an LJ-Cut). The winning poem will be published in the following newsletter. In addition, the author will receive a virtual blue ribbon! If you have the time, come drop us a rhyme. Please keep the "Nantucket" stuff on the downlow, since this is a youth-friendly community. Our first prompt is: Insomnia in winter.

Photos of the week

We're back with more incredible images from our global photography community. Congratulations to [info]sempre_marseeya, who has been awarded a virtual blue ribbon as the winner of our second [info]lj_photophile poll.

We hate to squelch your creativity, but, as a courtesy to other users, please post only one photo at a time and keep the main photo no larger than 350x350 (so images display properly via mobile and on friends pages). You can link to a larger image and/or post photos under a cut. Just so you know, we select photos for the poll blindly, based on user comments and staff feedback. Please continue to vote, comment, and, of course, enjoy. You can check out the week in pictures and view more awesome user content after the jump!

Jersey Scarves

  • Dec. 10th, 2009 at 4:07 PM
So, I like these Jersey scarves I keep seeing every where and it appears American Apparel sells "blanks".

The descriptions in the etsy listings say that they have unfinished edges.
Does this mean I could just go buy my own jersey fabric and use it as is??
Would there be a way to "finish" the edges so it wouldn't fray - just sew a line around it maybe?? (no serger)

All the scarves on etsy are lovely but I'd love to customize my own.

A Q&A with jfboyd

  • Dec. 10th, 2009 at 3:58 PM
A Q&A with [info]jfboyd, featuring [info]jfboyd on the question dais.

Q: So, OK, Jim--I gotta ask you, I gotta ask you--what's up with you and Pearlswine? You've been gone for a while--what gives?

A: Well, I'll tell you, it's been a mixture of continuing problems with my laptop connectivity, and then switching ISPs, plus a little personal stuff thrown into the mix, yadda yadda yadda. Totally sucks, you know what I'm saying? We just had a blizzard, and I was offline through the whole damn thing. Felt like I was living in a cave.

Q: OK, OK, enough excuses--you have Internet at work, why didn't you post there?

A: That was my original plan, for sure. But, damn, you know what? When I'm at work, I'm at work--makes it kind of hard to break out to do anything personal. Plus, of course, to my bosses--I *never* use the Internet for personal time. :P

Q: That's weak sauce, Jim. You should always do personal stuff before work.

A: I know it, I know it, but there it is. I wasn't expecting to be offline for so long. I'm still waiting for my new ISP to hook me up. They're local, so there's that, though.

Q: All right, so what you gonna do for the legions of pearlswine fans out there. They're mad as hell, and they're not gonna take it anymore.

A: Hey, yes, I hear that, definitely. I'll tell you what--major apologies to all my pearlswine readers. As Big Bill says, "I feel your pain." Here's what we're going to do. I'm going to take another five days for hiatus--get myself hooked back up, get everything going again. In the meantime, I'm looking for anybody who would like to be a co-Mod with me. That way, if I run into technical difficulties like this again, or take a vacation, whatever, I can have someone to get in touch with to keep the flow uninterrupted.

Q: So what should people do if they're interested in being a co-Mod?

A: Easy, easy. Just shoot me an e-mail at vendaz@hotmail.com, give me some details about your availability so that I know I can contact you in a pinch, and I will set you up. With my personal thanks for the help! Just please be sure that you can be available when I need you! I'll probably pick at least two people for co-Mods to help me out when I need it.

Q: Cool, cool. Anything else you want to say to the legions of pearlswine readers out there?

A: Yeah, definitely--thanks for all your support and understanding. I'm sorry I've been away so long, and pledge to do better, with a little extra help. Keep it real, peeps, and don't do drugs!

Quick Question! I need some quick answers!

  • Dec. 10th, 2009 at 3:45 PM
Do any of you guys use or know of a good recipe for icing on Gingerbread or sugar cookies....that gets hard enough to ship them or hard enough that you can stack them and the icing won't get all mushed?

I would like to know one that you guys have used so that I know that it will sit right. I am making cookies to ship and I don't want to send plain cookies!

Also the icing has to be good enough to pipe onto the cookies...and then get hard.

TIA!

******EDIT********

I found one that didn't need egg whites or meringue powder. I didn't see it the first time! Thanks though!
