OK, so I got into a groove with not creating rubbish and it's been 3 months and I still haven't filled a plastic supermarket bag with rubbish. But I figure that it's best not to set any firm targets like 1 bag a year because as soon as I do that, sure as shooting the washing machine will crap out or something. Today I had a sad moment when I was washing the second most important gadget in my kitchen, my coffee plunger, and the glass broke in my hands. So it's been added to the rubbish, along with a band-aid and wrapper from dealing with the cut.
Meanwhile, in real rubbish news, hundreds of Melbourne residents have been advised to move out of their homes for as much as a year because their properties were built next to a landfill that is leaking dangerous levels of methane gas.

I was thinking of you when I went to a Whole Foods shop last week. They have a bin area, and given that the scale can tare, it might be possible for shoppers to bring in their own containers. The setup, though, was begging for user error. The instructions said to enter the PLU code, which was written on each container as 4 digits. However, in small print, the instructions were expanded: Enter '1', then the PLU code. Three people in a row got screwed up by that, because they entered the code as it was written on the bulk container.
User hostile environment. Did they test this with real people before deciding that that would be a good way to do things?
good work!
Sorry to hear about the plunger and the cut.
Slater and Gordon are mounting a class action to help those people affected by the gas leak. It is such a pity that the landfill exists, that it was not properly dealt with and that the people affected are as usual least equipped financially to deal with such a disruption and its consequences!!
Stay well!
